Jomon period (around 10,000 BC) – the inhabitants of Japan were mainly gatherers, hunters, and fisherman.
Yayoi period (around 300 BC) – rice cultivation was introduced from the Korean Peninsula.
Kofun Period (ca. AD 300-710) – In the fourth century, the country was united as Yamato Japan with its political center in and around the province of Yamato (about today’s Nara Prefecture). The period’s name comes from the large tombs (kofun) that were built for the political elite of that era. These tombs were often surrounded with clay cylinders and figurines called haniwa.
